Psychidae caterpillars (or bagworms) spend their entire lives within a silken sleeve often decorated/disguised with what they find around them, whether it be loose leaves, pine needles or twigs. They extend these structures as they grow, feeding from the leaf surface at the base. Different species make characteristic structures and use specific materials usually associated with their host plant.

This is the North American-style lumberjack version.
